While Romero used the aforementioned zombies as allegories for everything from the Cold War to rampant consumerism, kaiju were a direct response to mankind harnessing the power of the atom.
It wasn't until the era of super-cheap dollar store DVDs that I became a big fan of the "giant monster" genre. At its worst, the films are about rubber suits and cardboard buildings (still fun). At its best, a kaiju movie speaks to a post-nuclear world - a beast that can't be contained once it has been set free.
